The University of Portsmouth has won a prestigious contract to oversee courses at a new military technological college in Oman.

Students from schools in Portsmouth became real-life engineers for a day when they were asked to design and build prototype communications devices for rescue teams in remote locations.

The annual Engineering Professors’ Council Congress was hosted by the University of Portsmouth earlier this month. Guest speakers included physicist, author and broadcaster, Professor Jim Al-Khalili OBE who challenged engineers to emulate the recent rise in the general public’s appreciation of ‘popular science’.

A robot that follows its owner around, a pet feeder that communicates via the internet, how to hide data in a video clip and a model for cost-effective tidal turbines are just some of the exciting student projects showcased on a new website. 

Theoretical physicist, author and broadcaster, Professor Jim Al-Khalili OBE will be the special guest speaker at a free public lecture on the importance of good  communications in the fields of science and engineering. 

A computing student at the University of Portsmouth has won a place at a prestigious Women in Technology event run for women studying traditionally male-dominated subjects.

Portsmouth residents attended an evening of stargazing, space activities, public lectures and cosmology chat at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard in January. Over 600 people were at HMS Warrior 1860 in Portsmouth for the BBC Stargazing LIVE 2013 partner event.
