On 1 August two departments have joined to make possibly the biggest school in the University of Portsmouth. The School of Engineering has been formed as the Departments of Mechanical and Design Engineering and Electronic and Computer Engineering join together under a new structure. The school will teach over 1100 undergraduate, 160 MSc and 40 PhD students, with another healthy recruitment cycle expected for 2011 start. The school also boasts an impressive collaborative portfolio with the Royal Navy and British Army programmes and remains a very popular destination for international students. Subjects span a broad range of professionally accredited engineering related disciplines, from Product Design, via Mechanical, Manufacturing, Petroleum, Electronic, Communication and Computer Engineering to Computer Networking and Internet Engineering.
The School will be led by a new senior management team. This will combine members of staff from both departments who will be looking at areas of strength with the aim of building on these and seeking out further opportunities to work together more thoroughly and flexibly.
The Head of the new school Dr Misha Filip said: "I'm delighted at the opportunity that this gives our students, staff and the Faculty of Technology. When you bring together two teams like this it is because there are plenty of opportunities in working together for new courses and new research. An exciting time lies ahead for all of us, staff and students alike. I would like to see us continuing to teach as well as we now do and explore and extend into new areas like energy, from generation to smart grids, and more integrated multidisciplinary engineering, manufacturing and design applications. One of the first challenges that academic staff face is to try and think about what areas they would like to work on together."
The School of Engineering will continue to specialise in the range of courses that are currently offered so that students can study to become qualified engineers and designers. Other opportunities will be developed so that the School continues to respond to the needs of employers and embeds new research knowledge in the curriculum. The School is also benefiting from a large investment in the refurbishment of the mechanical and manufacturing engineering laboratories and the computer networking laboratory.
