Supported by BAE Systems Surface Ships Limited, a studentship up to £16,000 p.a. (tax free) for 3 years plus UK/EU fees is available.
The PhD research project is developing a scientific method to extend the life of ageing marine jetties. It is a common phenomenon that structures degrade throughout their life time because materials and/or structures are locally damaged due to variable environmental factors. Marine jetties are subject to particularly severe conditions due to erosion by sea water. The study will establish a scientific approach to assess the residual life for the current damaged jetty and to extend the design life of repaired jetties, enhancing the safety factor of the structure.
