Faculty of Technology

The Faculty of Technology is pleased to receive applications from overseas and Home/EU students who wish to pursue research degrees. At the end of a 2 or 3 year full-time programme (or part-time equivalent), successful candidates will be eligible for the award of either an MPhil (Master of Philosophy), or a PhD (Doctor of Philosophy).

What are higher degrees by research?

Research degrees are an opportunity for you to undertake independent research in a selected topic, working closely with a University supervisory team, who will monitor, guide and advise you. You will attend research seminars and conferences, as well as lectures and courses on research methods. At the end of the period you will write up your research in a thesis and then defend your work in an oral examination carried out by a combination of internal and external examiners.

Why do a higher degree by research?

  • To make a significant contribution to your field of knowledge
  • To pursue an area of interest to a great depth
  • To improve your analytical abilities and gain intellectual stimulation
  • To enhance your career prospects - in Universities, research and elsewhere
  • To acquire the skills to train others in research

What qualifications do you require to study a PhD?

  • A good first degree or masters qualification in an appropriate subject from an Internationally recognised University or
  • Exceptionally, equivalent professional training and experience and/or qualifications

How to apply?

  • Send your CV, together with a short description of your research interests to the relevant department
  • After discussing your applications with you, we will decide whether there is a basis for a research degree that we can supervise, and whether there are funding opportunities (if you do not already have funding)

Who do I contact?
