Personal profile

My academic career was preceded by extensive HRM and HRD management and consultancy experience in a range of different public and private sector organisations. I specialise in learning and development in work organisations, particularly coaching in the workplace; how professionals learn; and organisational issues associated with strategic human resource development and the evaluation, measurement and assessment of learning.  I fulfil a leading role in the University of Portsmouth Graduate School and I am responsible for the Graduate School development and support provision for all research students.

Research interests

My current research interests are focused in three areas: Strategic Human Resource Development, the development of academic professionals in practice based disciplines and the evaluation, assessment and measurement of training and education. I am a committed researcher-practitioner and in all my work I aim to encourage a closer relationship between research and practice. For me the best research and the best professional practice occurs when both aspects are brought together to challenge received wisdom or common sense, to develop understanding of the issues.

I speak at a range of national and international professional and academic conferences and summits on HRD and HRM issues. I am a member of two international associations for Universities, reflective practitioners and learning-orientated organisations: the Academy for Human Resource Development and the Universities Forum for Human Resource Development. I am a member of the Editorial Advisory Board for the European Journal of Training and Development.

I enjoy working with the UK Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD); I have been the lead researcher for two CIPD research projects and am the author of a range of on-line practical tools and the CIPD text book, Research Methods in HRM.

Teaching

In addition to my teaching on University Graduate School workshops and events my teaching focuses on research methods, human resource development, learning and training.
