Personal profile

I have lectured at the University of Portsmouth since 1999, having previously been a lecturer at the University of Bath and Manchester Metropolitan University and, before that, a contracted researcher at several UK universities.

Research interests

My research interests are varied and have included the following areas: public sector employment relations, especially the impact of privatisation and marketisation; the employment and industrial relations policies of political parties; regional devolution in the UK and employment relations; trade unions in the UK and Europe, especially in relation to the European social model and European single currency; technology and the changing nature of work; internships, especially the implications for public policy and for protest campaigning.  My publications have focused on these areas, in journals such a New Technology, Work and Employment, Industrial Relations Journal, Parliamentary Affairs, Economic and Industrial Democracy and Personnel Review.

Teaching profile

My teaching activities have been mainly in the fields of employee relations; organisational behaviour; international and comparative human resource management (HRM) and employment relations; and work, technology and organisation.  I have contributed to chapters in popular undergraduate textbooks on the subjects of international HRM and technology and organisations.

Academic profile

I have been a member of Higher Education Academy, the Institute of Welsh Affairs and the British Universities' Industrial Relations Association (BUIRA).  I have been active in BUIRA's Public Sector Study Group.  I was a member of the editorial board of the British Sociological Association journal Work, Employment and Society between 2001-3.

Administrative and managerial profile

My administrative responsibilities at the university have included being departmental library liaison officer, and acting as staff representative on the departmental research and knowledge transfer committee.  I have been a library committee representative at both faculty and university levels.
