Portsmouth Business School
Undergraduate Admissions
Welcome to the University of Portsmouth Business School (PBS) Admissions page where you will find information about the undergraduate application process. If you have any questions that are not answered here, please contact the PBS Admissions Team at bus.admissions@port.ac.uk.
Finding the right course
If you are unsure about which course you would like to undertake, think about which of your current subjects you enjoy most or which career you are interested in - this is your chance to study whatever you like. Some of our courses have common first years, which would enable you to swap from one to the other after the end of the first year if you find you have a particular aptitude for one of the subjects. If you?re stuck for ideas, request our prospectus or take the Stamford test which is a short questionnaire that recommends some career paths based on your interests and abilities.
Entry requirements
Whether you are looking at our prospectus or our website, the entry requirements are shown as UCAS points. All of our courses require points gained from 3 A Levels or equivalent (please note we only accept UCAS points gained at AS Level on Hospitality Management courses). Additionally, you will need to have achieved a minimum of GCSE grade C in Maths (B if you want to study Economics) and English. The table below gives you an idea of what points you will gain from your A2 results. If you are not studying A Levels then please see UCAS tariff tables for more details.
| A Level grade | UCAS points |
|---|---|
| A | 120 |
| B | 100 |
| C | 80 |
| D | 60 |
| E | 40 |
Attend a University Preview Day
We strongly recommend that you not only register for and attend one of our Preview Days held between July and November but those Preview or Open Days of other universities in which you may be interested - it will definitely help you with making your decision about which course and which university will best suit you and your requirements. Once you have been made an offer we will invite you to a Departmental Open Day in the spring. If you are unable to attend one of our Preview or Departmental Open Days please contact us on bus.admissions@port.ac.uk and we will endeavour to make alternative arrangements.
Apply via UCAS
You will need to fill in the online application form at UCAS, which gives a good overview of the application stages. Please be sure to complete your application fully, including all your relevant and predicted qualifications such as A Levels or equivalent. The institution code for the University of Portsmouth is PORT P80.
Tracking your application
Once you have made your application online, UCAS will forward it to the Admissions Team for consideration. You can check the status of your application through UCAS Tracking. As soon as we receive your application from UCAS, it is our aim to give you a response within 10 working days.
Receiving an offer
If you receive an offer from PBS, it will be either Conditional (dependent on you achieving your predicted grades) or Unconditional (you may have already achieved the appropriate number of UCAS points and have taken a year out). For some applicants we may offer a place on a different course (this might happen for a number of reasons - insufficient points or the course may be full). At this point, we will invite you to attend one of our Departmental Open Days at which you can find out even more about the course of your choice, meet the academics and meet other students who are considering PBS as one of their choices.
The PrepUP website
If you then notify us that you are accepting the offer that has been made, you will be eligible to receive notification, via e-mail, of the log-in procedure that will be required to access the PrepUP website, which is available from the beginning of June.
The website comprises a range of features including: skills development activities, videos of lecturers and students talking about the course and learning experience, and an animated mock-up 'lecture theatre' that deals with frequently asked questions and social networking groups, enabling you to interact with other prospective students of your chosen course.
