Academic colleagues from across the world, friends and family gathered last night to celebrate the posthumous launch of Professor David Whitmarsh’s book: Economic Management of Marine Living Resources: A Practical Introduction.
The book is a culmination of the esteemed career of the late Professor, described as ‘a world authority on the economics of fisheries’ by Times Higher Education.
Professor Whitmarsh was Professor of Marine Resource Management at the University of Portsmouth, where he was part of the Centre for the Economics and Management of Aquatic Resources (CEMARE) within the Department of Economics.
Published by Earthscan, the book illustrates how economic theory and analysis can be combined to appraise and manage the oceans' wealth.
It outlines the problems associated with the management and conservation of marine living resources, with particular attention given to the twin concepts of economic value and sustainability.
Unusually, the text features a very practical perspective, to set out, in considerable detail, the key methods that may be used to collect and analyse socio-economic data. Specifically, it directly supports the information needs of all decision makers and stakeholders involved in fisheries management.
Head of the Department of Economics, Professor Alan Collins, said: “Professor Whitmarsh made a remarkable scholarly contribution to working in the field of fisheries, aquaculture and coastal-zone management. He was a long-serving and valuable member of staff at Portsmouth, joining what was then the Polytechnic in 1977 to eventually become renowned throughout the University and the marine resource management community as a teacher, supervisor and research colleague of the highest calibre.”
