Professor Gioia Pescetto starts today as the new Dean of Portsmouth Business School.

Educated in Italy, the USA and the UK, Professor Pescetto worked as an Economist at San Paolo Bank in London before moving into academia. She has taught extensively at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in several areas of economics and finance, including microeconomics, financial economics, corporate finance, treasury management and research methods.

Professor Pescetto said she is delighted to be joining Portsmouth Business School at a time of ambitious change in higher education and sweeping challenges to the global economy.

She said: “I look forward to continuing to progress the university’s strong record of business education and research. By extending our collaboration with business and academic partners, and with the wider community, I believe we are best placed to turn challenges into opportunities.

“I am committed to developing graduates who can operate in the increasingly complex world of business. We will work with companies to develop graduates who are responsible and global citizens, and who aspire to create real and lasting social value.

“The competition for students, academic talent and research funding is intense and the need to remain innovative has never been greater. My priority for Portsmouth Business School will be to foster knowledge within the University and across the academic and business worlds to promote the development of business education and rigorous business research that significantly improves practice.”

Professor Pescetto joins the Business School from Canterbury Christ Church University where she was Dean of the Faculty of Business and Management. She has also lectured at the universities of Surrey, Brunel and Durham.

Professor Pescetto will start at the Business School today following the retirement of Ann Ridley who has been Dean since 2001.
