Portsmouth Business School

Here to help you to make the most of your learning and study skills.

Welcome to the Business School’s Learning and Study Support page

The Business School has two tutors (Judith Martin and Aron Truss) available to help you improve and develop your academic skills, and to ensure that you obtain the support you need in any area related to your study, including:

  • Academic writing techniques (help with essays, reports, dissertations etc)
  • Making the most of feedback
  • Presentation and group work skills
  • Organising and planning your work load
  • Effective revision techniques and exam preparation

If you need to practise a presentation, we are happy to comment on your delivery, body language and style, as well as advising on the structure and pace of the presentation.

If you have an issue and aren’t sure who to go to for help, feel free to come and see us, and we’ll be able to point you in the right direction.

How can I see you?

We run one-to-one sessions from Monday-Thursday during term time (these can be booked via email/phone/in person). We also have drop-in sessions on Fridays for quick questions, but we recommend making a booked appointment to make sure you get the chance to see us. In addition, we will run small group sessions if students request them, and these can be tailored to suit your needs.

Who can attend?

Anyone undergraduate studying at Portsmouth Business School is welcome to use this service. We prioritise support for first year (Level 1) and direct entry students, but we are able to support students at Level 2 (and above) if required.

How do I book?

Book a one to one session with a tutor by contacting pbslearningsupport@port.ac.uk or call us on 02392 844007 (Internal - 4007). Alternatively, just visit us in person in the Richmond Building (floor 3, room 3.17)

Get in touch with us via email to ask about group sessions

Drop in sessions don’t need to be booked – just turn up and try your luck (first come first served).

What should I do/bring with me?

If you need support with a specific issue (for example, understanding the feedback on a piece of written work), please send this to us via email before your appointment.  This gives us time to prepare for our meeting and ensures that we will be able to support you. Feel free to bring work with you, such as an essay title, a marked piece of work, course documents or finished work, and we can refer to this if required.

Do my personal tutor/lecturers find out if I visit you?

We operate independently from your lecturers and personal tutors, so we won’t contact them without your permission (although we may encourage you to speak to them).

Where do I go?

We are based in office 3.17 on floor 3 of the Business School (within the Faculty Office). For entry, please ring 4007 by the door and we will come and meet you.
