Portsmouth Business School

Research

Preliminary Results of the UK Research Assessment Exercise show Portsmouth Business School (PBS) ranked highly for its research output. Business Schools across the UK were assessed on the quality and quantity of their research outputs on a scale from 1 (national excellence) to 4 (world class) for each output submitted. Among 90 universities submitting work in business and management, Portsmouth Business School (PBS) submitted the 15th largest number of research active staff and was 27th on a weighted quality basis, multiplying the number of outputs by the proportion in class and the quality score.

Not only are we represented in all the major business disciplines (Accounting, Economics, Finance, Human Resource Management, Law, and Marketing), we also have expertise reflected in specific research centres dealing with, for example, the management of marine resources (CEMARE), enterprise, innovation and quality (CERI) and a CIPD Centre of Excellence for personnel and human resource management.

Part of our research strategy has been to build a coherent cross-disciplinary research community, embedding our research within the teaching curriculum, and building stronger links with potential partners in both the private and public sectors.

A key stated aim of the PBS research strategy is to continue to foster further interdisciplinarity in business and management research at the University of Portsmouth. We have therefore established strong research links with the Institute of Criminal Justice Studies (ICJS), Logistics and Management Mathematics, and Computing Science through the UK Systems Society.

We have also developed our research degree programme and have begun to integrate it more fully within the mainstream activities of the Portsmouth Business School.
