Who we are
Economics and Finance offer an educational experience that encourages active learning and critical and creative thinking and research and consultancy services that have national and international reach and significance. We are an international community engaging with a diverse range of contemporary issues, employing our understanding of economics and finance to address rapidly changing business and social priorities.
What we do
Our courses are popular and successful because we fully engage students and pass on our enthusiasm to new generations. We blend theoretical rigour and learning-by-doing to develop skills that allows students to explore business, economics and finance with confidence. Continual innovation in new teaching technologies and practices enhances the potential of our students, who receive exceptional guidance and support as they emerge as independent scholars able to put theory and method to work. Our approach recognises the importance of developing skills that are transferrable beyond disciplinary boundaries, extending the value of a Portsmouth economics education throughout a lifetime.
Reputation and Research
Our commitment to excellence extends to research and knowledge transfer. We believe that research-engagement is essential for the currency of our curriculum and its delivery. Our work is dedicated to applications of disciplinary knowledge to problem solving and policy formation, with a strong emphasis upon applied econometric research. The focus of our research reflects our wide interests, which this year has included agriculture and fisheries, bank profitability, foreign direct investment, international trade, speculative bubbles and financial crises, sport, and transport policy. Organisations, from the local to the international, draw upon our expertise to guide their operations. In turn this research effort drives our professional development and the currency of our curriculum, while supporting our growing research student community.
