First alumni event takes place in the West Country

Former students from the University of Portsmouth gathered at Bristol Museum and Art Galleryfor the first official alumni event to be held in the West Country on Wednesday 28 March.

In this beautiful venue, graduates and their friends reminisced about their time in Portsmouth as they enjoyed drinks and canapés to the music of string quartet, Sul Tasto.

Opening the evening was Director of Marketing, Peter Reader who thanked everyone for coming and introduced the guest of honour for the evening, crime novelist, Graham Hurley.

Graham was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University in 2007.  He spoke of his love for home-town Portsmouth (“Pompey”) for which he based his on-going crime series featuring D/I Joe Faraday and D/C Paul Winter. He has now had 23 novels to date.

Alumni Relations Officer, Vicky Hodson said:

“We are really pleased with the feedback from our alumni and were delighted to see so many people had travelled such a long way to attend. It was great to catch up with some of our former students from all eras to find out what they are up to now.”

In attendance, was alumna, Ginny Blackmore who graduated with a Spanish degree in 1980.  She said:

“The evening was really lovely and confirmed my belief that going to Portsmouth Poly (now Uni) was the best thing that ever happened to me! It was a dynamic, friendly and innovative place of learning where well trained and motivating teachers/lecturers used cutting edge ideas and used a variety of learning styles to engage the students. The event managed to capture this special essence by being warm and welcoming, open to new ideas and suggestions and choosing really inspiring speakers! The food and drink were excellent too and served by friendly and attentive waiters. Thanks so much for organising the event….”
