I met the love of my life at Portsmouth

In celebration of the Royal Wedding we asked you to tell us if you met the love of your life at University like Will and Kate. We have been so touched by your romantic stories that we thought we should share them with you here. Others have been featured in the latest edition of the alumni magazine. In the next edition of our magazine we would like to include weddings that have taken place in 2011/2012. If you are marrying a former student over the next year, please email us a brief story and a picture after your wedding day to alumni@port.ac.uk

  • Vanessa Procter

I met the love of my life Alex Ruck, while studying in Portsmouth. We did not get together during this time, but one year after graduating we did get together and we only know each other as a result of Pompey.

  • James Allardice

My wife and I met when we were studying at Portsmouth. It was during the summer of 1999. I had finished my second year (BSc Hons Physics) and Kate had finished her first year (BSc Hons Geography). I was taking a year out to be Academic Affairs Officer and I think Kate may have even asked me about the prices of beer in the Students' Union bar! We married in 2002 and have two children; William (3) and Grace (1).

  • Melanie Canuti

My husband and I met at Portsmouth University in September 1991 and have now been married for 12 years with 3 kids!

  • Sarah Spicer

I met my husband Chris whilst living opposite each other in Harry Law Halls in 2004. We had an instant attraction to each other and I can still remember the very first time I saw him. We both were quite shy and in awe of each other and we didn't really speak to each other for the first month living together, but on a night out we eventually found out that the feeling was mutual and we have been together ever since. We moved in together into a flat in Southsea for our second year at Uni, where Chris proposed on our 1 year anniversary - a total surprise! A few years later we got married on 18th April 2009 and now live in Aldershot where I work in London for a few Newspapers and Chris is still studying Architecture at Portsmouth University.

  • Jo Bowcock

I met my husband Philip Bowcock at Portsmouth when I was studying Cultural Studies and he was studying Economic History in 1988-91. We stayed together and have been married almost 18 yrs. We also have 4 children.

  • Lisa Turner

I met my partner Dean on the first day I was in halls (he lived opposite me!) after he poked his head around my door and asked if I needed help unloading my car (which I did as I have TONS of shoes/clothes/bags!). We are still together nearly 4 years later and moved into our own flat at Christmas. We have always said we were meant to meet as I should have started uni the year before but I deferred at the last minute and he was going to go to Southampton but changed his mind at the last minute! I'm just very glad we ended up in Langstone together!

  • Sarah Hopkins (Foster)

My husband and I met at university in Portsmouth. We were both on the MPharm course from 1998-2002 and have been together since 1999. Nowadays, we are both working as Pharmacists and have been married since 2005. We have a 2 year old daughter. We try to get back down to Portsmouth at least once a year as it still feels like home! Happy days!

  • Stella Marshall

I met Bill when we were both studying post grad CIPD at Portsmouth in 1998. We were great pals but nothing more and unfortunately Bill had to leave after completing the first year. I went onto to Graduate in 2000. I next bumped into Bill in a Superstore in Southampton in 2002, after I had returned from 9 months travelling round the world. Our eyes met over the electrical applicances! We remained pals, though still no romance and met occasionally at reunions over the next couple of years. Following some heart to hearts we started seeing other properly in 2003/4 although I think we were both slightly cautious that we might destroy a great friendship. Suffice to say Bill proposed on Christmas Day 2005 and we married on 14 April 2007. We are still on our honeymoon! Although late in life for both us, we are incredibly happy and often feel that fate must have had a hand in bringing us together again. Thanks to Portsmouth University for making it happen!

  • Michael Barling

I did indeed meet the love of my life at Pompey. We both studied sports science from 1996-1999. Married last year (took me too long to do the decent thing, I'm ashamed to admit!) and we have a daughter of 11 months. We both loved life at Uni and often reminisce about those worry-free days!

  • Karen O'Grady

We met 5 years ago in a fairly complicated way as my housemate at the time is his cousin's ex-girlfriend. His cousin happened to be visiting for a weekend and he wanted to meet up with his ex (they're still friends). So we went to a bar that night and that's where it all started... We've not been together for that entire time as I spent my third year studying abroad; It was clearly meant to be though as we got back together and are now planning our wedding for November this year!

  • Kim Parkes

I met my husband in 1998 while studying for my degree. He was studying a similar course to mine and we shared a number of lectures. We became a couple in 2000 while at University, married in 2006 and now have 2 children, Maisie (2) and Harry (1). My husband, Andy is now a Customer Services Manager and I am a full-time mum, having left teaching to have my children. Without Portsmouth University we would never have met.
