How many Governors do we have?
- We have the maximum allowed of 25.
- We have 18 external governors (of which 13 are termed "independent" and of which 5 are termed "co-opted", in accord with the categorisation in the Instrument of Government).
- We have 4 staff governors, of which 2 are teaching staff governors nominated by Academic Council, 1 is elected by and from the academic staff and 1 is elected by and from the support staff.
- We have 2 student governors:
- President of UPSU (ex-officio)
- Student Governor (appointed through the same process used to appoint external governors)
- President of UPSU (ex-officio)
- The Vice-Chancellor is a governor (ex-officio)
External Governors (18 maximum)
Formerly Finance Director, Trinity Energy Limited. Mike joined the Board in January 2005 and is a member of Ethics Committee, Audit and Quality Committee and Finance Committee.
Formerly Director General of the Agriculture Development and Advisory Service (ADAS) and Chief Scientific Adviser to the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. Peter joined the Board in August 2010 and is Chairman of Audit and Quality Committee and a member of Estate and Information Technology Committee.
An international HR consultant, business manager, published author, and former Vice-President, Learning, and Talent Development of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD). Janice joined the Board in May 2011 and is Chairman of Human Resources Committee.
Formerly Chairman of the Portsmouth and South East Hampshire Multicultural Group. Marie joined the Board in January 2006 and is a member of Human Resources Committee, Nominations Committee and the Student and Governor Advisory Group.
Bishop of Portsmouth (Anglican). Bishop Christopher joined the Board in February 2014 and is a member of Finance Committee.
An accomplished executive with role experience as a chairman, CEO/VP, non-executive director, mentor/business doctor and writer/broadcaster. Mark joined the Board in May 2011 and is a member of Audit and Quality Committee and the Student and Governor Advisory Group.
Formerly an HR professional and now undertakes freelance HR consulting. Jane joined the Board in August 2013 and is a member of Finance Committee.
Stuart Iles (Chairman of the Board of Governors)
Formerly Bank of England Agent. Stuart joined the Board in July 2004. He was appointed Chairman of the Board in March 2009.
Formerly European Human Resources Service Centre Manager, IBM. Martin joined the Board in January 2006 and is the Deputy Chairman. He is a member of Audit and Quality Committee and Human Resources Committee.
Director, European and Government Affairs, National Air Traffic Services (NATS). Anne joined the Board in October 2012 and is a member of Human Resources Committee.
Vice President Risk Management at Skanska, a Swedish construction company. Mark joined the Board in May 2011 and is a member of Estate and Information Technology Committee.
Formerly a Finance Professional in the oil industry and now runs a small consultancy business. Paul joined the Board in August 2013 and is a member of Audit and Quality Committee.
Senior Finance Director, Research and Development, Misys. Based at Group headquarters in London. Mark joined the Board on 1 August 2010 and is a member of Finance Committee.
Former Managing Director of Geest Line Ltd. Bill joined the Board of Governors in November 2010 and is a member of Estate and Information Technology Committee and Chairman of Finance Committee. At its meeting on 26 March 2014, the Board elected Bill as Chairman-in-waiting to succeed Stuart Iles in July 2014.
Honorary Professor of Dentistry, King’s College, London. Nairn joined the Board in October 2012 and is a member of Finance Committee.
Elected Staff Governors (2)
Deputy Director, Marketing and Communications Department. Anne is the Support Staff Governor, elected by and from University of Portsmouth support staff. She joined the Board in August 2012.
Professor of Health Sciences in the School of Health Sciences and Social Work. Tara is the Academic Staff Governor, elected by and from University of Portsmouth academic staff. She joined the Board in August 2012.
Academic Council Nominated Teaching Staff (2)
Associate Dean (Innovation and Business), Business School. David joined the Board in August 2012 as a Teaching Staff Governor nominated by Academic Council.
Associate Dean (Students) in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Peter joined the Board in November 2004 as a Teaching Staff Governor nominated by Academic Council. He attends meetings of Human Resources Committee and is a member of Nominations Committee.
Student Governors (2)
Vacancy at 1 August 2013.
Cat is the President of the Students' Union, which makes her a Governor ex-officio. Cat joined the Board in July 2013. She is a member of Estate and Information Technology Committee, the Student and Governor Advisory Group and Nominations Committee, and is in attendance at Finance Committee.
Vice-Chancellor of the University – ex-officio
Vice-Chancellor – ex-officio. Graham has been the Vice-Chancellor of the University since September 2013.
