How many Governors do we have?
- We have up to 25 governors, which is the maximum that stands as the benchmark of good practice in accord with the CUC Governance Code of Practice.
- Within the total membership, we have up to 18 external governors (of which 13 are termed "independent" and of which 5 are termed "co-opted", in accord with the categorisation in the Instrument of Government).
- We have 4 staff governors, of which 2 are teaching staff governors nominated by Academic Council, 1 is elected by and from the academic staff and 1 is elected by and from the support staff.
- We have 2 student governors:
- President of UPSU (ex-officio)
- Student Governor (appointed through the same process used to appoint external governors)
- President of UPSU (ex-officio)
- The Vice-Chancellor is a governor (ex-officio)
External Governors (18 maximum)
Formerly Director General of the Agriculture Development and Advisory Service (ADAS) and Chief Scientific Adviser to the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. Peter joined the Board in August 2010 and is Chair of Audit and Quality Committee and a member of Estate and Information Technology Committee.
Jenny has over twenty years’ experience of working in the public sector and over fifteen years working at a senior level in national organisations. For the past three years she has worked as a public sector consultant advising on and facilitating the work of corporate strategies and evaluating the effectiveness of national programmes. Jenny joined the Board in August 2017.
Bishop of Portsmouth (Anglican). Bishop Christopher joined the Board in February 2014 and is a member of Finance Committee.
An accomplished executive with role experience as a chairman, CEO/VP, non-executive director, mentor/business doctor and writer/broadcaster. Mark joined the Board in May 2011 and is a member of Audit and Quality Committee and the Student and Governor Advisory Group.
Jane Hoskins (Chair of the Board of Governors)
Formerly an HR professional and now undertakes freelance HR consulting. Jane joined the Board in August 2013 and is a member of Estate and Information Technology Committee and Human Resources Committee.
A working pharmacist and businessman running Lalys Pharmacy, the largest independent chain of pharmacies in Portsmouth. Baldev joined the Board in August 2016.
Inquiry Chair at the Competition and Markets Authority. Anne joined the Board in October 2012 and is a member of Finance Committee.
Vice President Risk Management at Skanska, a Swedish construction company. Mark joined the Board in May 2011 and is the Chair of Estate and Information Technology Committee.
Experienced Board director and business leader with extensive knowledge of the international energy sector. Frances joined the Board in March 2015 and is a member of Audit and Quality Committee.
Formerly a Finance Professional in the oil industry. Paul joined the Board in August 2013 and is a member of Audit and Quality Committee.
Senior Finance Director, Research and Development, Misys. Based at Group headquarters in London. Mark joined the Board on 1 August 2010 and is the Chair of Finance Committee.
Public Appointments Assessor: chairing selection panels for key public appointments on behalf of the Commissioner for Public Appointments, Judicial Appointments Commission Panel Member. Margaret joined the Board in March 2015 and is a member of Human Resources Committee.
Currently Chairman of Circle Research, a marketing and strategy consultancy. David joined the Board in February 2016.
Honorary Professor of Dentistry, King’s College, London. Nairn joined the Board in October 2012 and is a member of Finance Committee.
Elected Staff Governors (2)
Regional Manager, International Office. Kathryn is the Support Staff Governor, elected by and from University of Portsmouth support staff. She joined the Board in August 2016.
Professor of Human and Applied Physiology. Mike is the Academic Staff Governor, elected by and from University of Portsmouth academic staff. He joined the Board in August 2014.
Academic Council Nominated Teaching Staff (2)
Senior Lecturer, School of Social, Historical and Literary Studies. Karen joined the Board in August 2016 as a Teaching Staff Governor nominated by Academic Council.
Associate Dean (Academic), Faculty of Technology. Jenny joined the Board in August 2016 as a Teaching Staff Governor nominated by Academic Council.
Student Governors (2)
Lucy joined the Board in August 2017. She is a member of Estate and Information Technology Committee and the Student and Governor Advisory Group.
James is the President of the Students' Union, which makes him a Governor ex-officio. James joined the Board in July 2017. He is a member of Estate and Information Technology Committee, the Student and Governor Advisory Group and Nominations Committee, and is in attendance at Finance Committee.
Vice-Chancellor of the University – ex-officio
Vice-Chancellor – ex-officio. Graham has been the Vice-Chancellor of the University since September 2013.
