How many Governors do we have?
- We have the maximum allowed of 25.
- We have 18 external governors (of which 13 are termed "independent" and of which 5 are termed "co-opted", in accord with the categorisation in the Instrument of Government).
- We have 4 staff governors, of which 2 are teaching staff governors nominated by Academic Council, 1 is elected by and from the academic staff and 1 is elected by and from the support staff.
- We have 2 student governors:
(i) President of UPSU (ex-officio)
(ii) Student Governor (appointed through the same process used to appoint external governors)
- The Vice–Chancellor is a governor (ex-officio)
External Governors (18 maximum)
Stuart Iles
Chairman of the Board of Governors
Formerly Bank of England Agent. Stuart joined the Board in July 2004. He was appointed Chairman of the Board in March 2009.
Dr Zenna Atkins
CEO of Wey Education plc and MD of its subsidiary company Zail Enterprises Ltd. Zenna joined the Board in May 2011 and is a member of Audit and Quality Committee.
Mike Brooks
Formerly Finance Director, Trinity Energy Limited. Mike joined the Board in January 2005 and is a member of Ethics Committee and Chairman of Audit and Quality Committee.
Dr Peter Bunyan
Formerly Director General of the Agriculture Development and Advisory Service (ADAS) and Chief Scientific Adviser to the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. Peter joined the Board in August 2010 and is a member of Audit and Quality Committee and Estate and Information Technology Committee.
Janice Caplan
An international HR consultant, business manager, published author, and former Vice-President, Learning, and Talent Development of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD). Janice joined the Board in May 2011 and is a member of Human Resources Committee.
Marie Costa
Formerly Chairman of the Portsmouth and South East Hampshire Multicultural Group. Marie joined the Board in January 2006 and is a member of Human Resources Committee, Nominations Committee and Chairman of Students' Academic and General Affairs Committee.
Dr Graham Floater
Director of The Climate Centre, Graham joined the Board in August 2009 and is a member of Finance Committee.
Mark Greenwood
An accomplished executive with role experience as a chairman, CEO/VP, non-executive director, mentor/business doctor and writer/broadcaster. Mark joined the Board in May 2011 and is a member of Audit and Quality Committee and Students' Academic and General Affairs Committee.
Adam Humphryes
Formerly Group Finance Director, Wightlink Limited. Adam joined the Board in January 2005 and is Chairman of Finance Committee and a member of Estate and Information Technology Committee.
Martin James
Formerly European Human Resources Service Centre Manager, IBM. Martin joined the Board in January 2006 and is the Deputy Chairman. He is a member of Audit and Quality Committee and is the Chairman of Human Resources Committee.
Mark Lemon
Project Director at Skanska, a Swedish construction company. Mark joined the Board in May 2011 and is a member of Estate and Information Technology Committee.
Deborah Owen-Ellis Clark
Strategic marketing consultant, working across a broad portfolio from retail and property, business services and arts organisations. Deborah joined the Board in August 2009 and is a member of Students' Academic and General Affairs Committee.
Mark Readman
Vice-President Finance, Global Services and Support, Misys. Based at Group headquarters in London. Mark joined the Board on 1 August 2010 and is a member of Finance Committee.
Bill Salmond
Former Managing Director of Geest Line Ltd. Bill joined the Board of Governors in November 2010 and is a member of the Finance Committee and Estate and Information Technology Committee.
Michael Staunton
Formerly Executive Development and Succession Planning Director, VT Group. Michael joined the Board in August 2009 and is a member of Human Resources Committee and Chairman of the UPEL Board.
Bernie Topham
Chief Executive of Eastleigh Borough Council. Bernie joined the Board in May 2011 and is the Chairman of Estate and Information Technology Committee.
Elected Staff Governors (2)
Dr Sascha Bachmann
Senior Lecturer in the School of Law. Sascha is the Academic Staff Governor, elected by and from University of Portsmouth academic staff. He joined the Board in August 2010 and is a member of Estate and Information Technology Committee.
Riz McNaught
Principal Administrator for Quality Assurance, Quality Management Division. Riz is the Support Staff Governor, elected by and from University of Portsmouth support staff. She attends meetings of Human Resources Committee.
Academic Council Nominated Teaching Staff (2)
Dr Karl Nunkoosing
Principal Lecturer in the Department of Psychology. Karl joined the Board in August 2008 as a Teaching Staff Governor nominated by Academic Council. He attends meetings of Finance Committee and Students' Academic and General Affairs Committee.
Dr Peter Starie
Associate Dean (Students) in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Peter joined the Board in November 2004 as a Teaching Staff Governor nominated by Academic Council. He attends meetings of Human Resources Committee and is a member of Nominations Committee.

Ben Fishwick
Ben is the Student Governor. He joined the Board in August 2011 and is a member of Estate and Information Technology Committee and Students' Academic and General Affairs Committee.
Amy Baker
Amy is the President of the Students' Union, which makes her a Governor ex-officio. Amy joined the Board in July 2011. She is a member of Estate and Information Technology Committee, Students' Academic and General Affairs Committee and Nominations Committee, and is in attendance at Finance Committee.
Vice-Chancellor of the University - ex-officio
Professor John Craven
Vice-Chancellor - ex-officio. John has been the Vice-Chancellor of the University since January 1997.
