Deborah Owen-Ellis Clark
Profile
I am an experienced retail and marketing professional with a proven track record in the strategic development and launch of retail brands and destinations. My experience is gained from working with blue-chip companies over the last 20 years on both national and international projects. Including Levi Strauss UK Limited, The Body Shop International Plc, Marks & Spencer Plc, and Land Securities PLC.
I have recently set up a strategic marketing consultancy, to enable me to work across a broad portfolio from retail and property, business services and arts organizations.
I am passionate about putting customers first, whether consumers or business customers, and have developed initiatives to encourage retail partners and businesses to truly engage with their consumers and communities in which they trade. My whole approach to business development and marketing is identifying and meet customer’s needs, through active engagement and improving the offer, as required.
Within my role at Gunwharf Quays, Portsmouth, UK, I developed an award-winning customer service programme, and community art programmes; won the bid to host two International round the world yacht races; and actively participated in city wide partnerships and broader destination marketing.
I am an active member of the City Growth initiative in Portsmouth, which is a private sector project with the objective of encouraging the future economic prosperity for the city, achieved by delivering specific projects. I currently chair two cluster groups, and led the brand vision project for the city image team, which engaged nearly 300 participants in the process of identifying the brand identity for Portsmouth.
I sat on the Arts & Business regional advisory board for four years, I am a Fellow of the RSA, and have been a parent governor at my daughters’ school since 2005.
I have worked in Portsmouth for nearly nine years, and having worked on a number of city-wide projects in partnership with the University, I have found our approaches to conducting business within the city and the region very compatible.
I am very impressed with the University’s approach to interacting with the wider Portsmouth community, from a business and as well as an educational perspective. Its commitment to strategic projects for the development and the greater good of Portsmouth and its stakeholders (eg community, business, and cultural) demonstrates an integral approach to city life, and a positive way of encouraging people to engage in learning.
I recently submitted my dissertation as the final module of a Master’s degree, and therefore have experienced the University from a student’s perspective, which has been invaluable, especially as a mature student entering higher education for the first time.
I am thrilled to formalise my relationship with the University by becoming a Governor. I feel I could add value to the Governing Body, both as a businessperson and hopefully as an alumnus, with specific expertise in marketing and business development.
I am very interested in understanding and becoming involved in how the University equips students with the knowledge and skills essential for life in the global workforce. Also how the University intends to / or could become accessible to life-long learning students, and continuous professional development. As well as contributing to the future of Portsmouth and it’s economic and cultural well-being.
