Wimba Create

Wimba create

You can create content for your Moodle course directly from within Moodle, and in most cases this will be your preferred option. However, some people prefer to generate their content outside of Moodle. At Portsmouth, the two most common ways of doing this are to use Wimba Create or Xerte.

Wimba Create is much simpler to learn than Xerte, and so this page concentrates on Create. If you want to learn more about Xerte, send an email to elearn@port.ac.uk

What is Wimba Create?

Wimba Create is an add-in to Microsoft Word on a PC, which uses a combination of special styles and dialogue boxes to add interactive features to a document. You can use Wimba Create to create flashcards, insert html and other code, add hyperlinks, develop self-test questions, and much more. When you export from Word using Wimba Create you end up with a ‘clean’ file that can be transformed into a variety of different elearning content formats.

Who is it for?

Wimba Create is for staff who are comfortable in using quite advanced features of Word, and would prefer to use Word rather than Moodle tools to create elearning content.

Why should I be using it?

You should consider using Wimba Create if you want to generate interactive elearning material and believe you could do this more quickly using Word rather than the tools within Moodle.

One point to bear in mind with Wimba Create is that the ‘master’ document of the content is outside Moodle. If you needed to change or update your elearning material then typically you would need to update the master Word document, re-export from Word, and then re-import into Moodle or Compass. This workflow is more complicated than authoring directly within Moodle.

How do I use Wimba Create?

Once it is installed, Wimba Create is available under the Add-Ins tab of Microsoft Word. By pressing “Start Wimba Create” you immediately get access to a variety of Word styles and dialogue boxes that enable you to add interactivity to your document.
