Department for Curriculum and Quality Enhancement
Fellowship Route (FHEA)

D2: Initial and Continuous Professional Development
D2 is the Fellowship Route to Descriptor 2 of the UK Professional Standards Framework for teaching and supporting learning in Higher Education (UKPSF) is for all academic staff both with and without previous experience. Descriptor 2 reflects main grade teaching responsibilities and is the expected descriptor for all staff who undertake substantive teaching as part of their role.
The route is for:
- An early career member of staff new to teaching and probably new to the University of Portsmouth
- An experienced academic but new to the University of Portsmouth
- An experienced academic with substantive teaching and learning responsibilities
In order to meet the needs of staff with a wide range of prior experience and professional expertise, the University offers two routes to Descriptor 2:
- Route A – A structured blended learning and development route. Staff with less than 2 years experience teaching in an HE context would normally be expected to follow this route
- Route B – A more flexible route with a range of collaborative and interactive development opportunities that is likely to be more suitable for staff with more than 2 years experience
As a participant of the Fellowship route, you will explore pedagogic and scholarly practice relevant to your subject area.
This programme is both for new and experienced academic staff. Staff new to teaching at Portsmouth and who has not already met Descriptor 2, will be advised by their Head of Department of the appropriate route (A or B) to follow as part of their probationary requirements. Existing members of staff may apply for either of the Fellowship programme routes, providing their applications are supported by their line manager and Head of Department who may suggest a preferred route. Additionally Heads of Department may nominate individuals to attend the programme.
Application/nomination for the programme
Your Head of Department will agree whether or not you should participate in this programme as part of the requirements of your role and possibly probation.
