I am currently on secondment as a principle lecturer within the Department of Curriculum and Quality Enhancement; while also a senior lecturer in the School of Computing. My PhD research was in ‘Optimising Quality of Service levels through experimentation on Streaming Media multimedia applications using WiMAX’. My research relates closely to my teaching of computer networks, for which the students have nominated me for four teaching awards. I am an external examiner for South Devon College in collaboration with Plymouth University as well as an external examiner at Southampton Solent University. Previously I have held posts as external examiner at Swansea Metropolitan University and collaborative programme External Examiner at University of Sussex. In these roles the quality, currency and consistency across the sector of the curriculum is examined.
Previously I have held the position of Systems Manager/ Department Manager at Safeway Stores plc, encompassing research and testing of new developments in EPOS systems; as well as director at Eyeline Designs LLP.
My main area of research is the Quality of Service (QoS) in ad hoc wireless networks. This focuses on networks that have no formal infrastructure. Therefore to maintain good QoS, the system must be interoperable to accommodate all types of categories of traffic, ensuring efficient bandwidth utilization, though it is recognized that this alone is a challenging undertaking. Today’s applications continually demand higher bandwidths while the users ‘demand’ better QoS. My research investigates techniques that provide a satisfactory balance of these requirements. QoS performance in the wireless environment presents many challenges, including bandwidth, delay, jitter, reliability and power issues to ensure a good user experience.
Research Techniques developed include:
- Resource Harvesting Redistribution, (RHR), looking at load balancing in the WiMAX infrastructure ensuring all traffic priorities are serviced and none are starved of the required resources while improving call admissions for each nodes.
- Interactive Adaptive Buffer Control, (iABC) a proposed systems that utilizes the control of a buffering system. This system ensures network provision for high priority users sharing the available bandwidth while accommodating adequate QoS.
