Black History Month 2012

Black History Month is held every October in Britian. The aims of the month are to:

  • Promote knowledge of Black History, Culture and Heritage
  • Disseminate information on positive Black contributions to British Society
  • Heighten the confidence and awareness of Black people to their cultural heritage

October was designated as Black History Month in 1987. Today it is a regular feature of celebrations within the cultural calendars across public/private sector organisations and community groups, used to highlight Black and Asian presence in the UK and celebrate the nations diverse cultural heritage.

Activity over the month includes:

  • Students and staff why not test, or research, your knowledge by taking part in our Black History Month Quiz. The added bonus is you could be in with a chance to win £50 of Blackwell's book vouchers.
  • Throughout October check out the photography exhibition taking place in the library. The portraits explore BME role models who excel in their particular field, promoting positive role models.
  • A celebration in song will take place in 3rd Space, 16th October 13:30-14:30pm. Join the IFCS Student Fellowship choir as they perform songs inspired by Nelson Mandela, anti-apartheid campaigners and songs from the Carribbean. UPSU will also be offer free food.
  • Immerse yourself in African and Caribbean culture at a community event hosted by University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth City Council and Hampshire Constabulary. The event takes place at Portsmouth Friendship Centre, Elm Grove, Southsea, PO5 1JT between 12:45-4:30pm. Full details here.
