Working Families - Helping working parents and carers achieve work-life balance

Working Families is a charity that works with organisations to promote and improve family-friendly policies and services, such as flexible working and support for carers and parents. It also provides direct support to staff through its help line and resource on-line.

The University has recently signed up to the Working Families programme and joins other organisations who, through sharing of best practice, knowledge and expertise, aim to be exemplars of well-being and family friendly activity. Part of the programme will see the University Audited in 2013 on its family friendly policies/procedures and importantly how they are implemented in the workplace.

It is hoped that Working Families will help the University deliver practical, and usable "family-friendly" policies and procedures and all staff are encouraged to check out the website and resource available.

As well as the resource offered on their website Working Families also provide a free helpline 0800 013 0313. It offers legal advise and on-going support for working parents and carers. This includes offering support and advice around your rights in family emergencies, maternity and paternity leave, negotiating family friendly hours, tax credits and benifits and support for parents of disabled children.
