You will be given your student ticket as well as your guest tickets and will then be able to collect your academic dress. You and your guests will require your seating tickets to enter the Guildhall.

In the Guildhall

You and your guests should be seated in the Guildhall at least 15 minutes before the beginning of the ceremony. Please allow good time to enter the building as there are approximately 2000 graduands and guests at each ceremony. Graduands will be seated by course in the order they will be called to the stage. Please note: graduands and guests are seated separately.

Complementary commemorative programmes will be available to all graduands and guests in the Guildhall.

The ceremony

The ceremonies will last approximately one and a half hours. The length of each ceremony will depend on the number of graduands and may be a little longer for the larger departments.

Two examples of the order of proceedings can be found here:

The procedure for on stage

You will be guided to the stage in a continuous procession. Graduand names will be checked twice before going on stage. Once the Head of Department or their representative has announced your name, you will walk across the stage, stopping to shake hands with the Chancellor and the Dean of Faculty. You will continue walking across the stage and exit. Academic Registry staff will be present to guide and direct you at all times.

After the ceremony

You and your guests will leave the auditorium of the Guildhall. Graduates and their guests gather in the Guildhall Square for informal photographs and there will also be the opportunity to purchase graduation gifts.

You may visit the photographer after the ceremony if you have not yet done so before the ceremony.

Please remember to return hired academic dress to Squash Court 1 in the Nuffield Centre before 6:00 pm.

Parchments

Parchments are sent to the mail/correspondence address on the student records system. Please check address details in the Student Portal and notify your school or departmental office of any changes. This will ensure that you receive parchments without delay. All parchments will be posted by recorded delivery.

Graduation filming

Ceremonies are filmed not only for the purposes of free downloads offered through the official graduation photographer, Success Photography, but also for marketing purposes, to be used solely by the University of Portsmouth. The graduation ceremonies will also be broadcast online from the University website and on the big screen in the Guildhall Square.

Other information

University Marshals will be present at the ceremony to provide information and guidance.
