Green Portsmouth
Carbon and energy management
The University of Portsmouth provides a higher education service to its customers. To deliver that service requires a range of building types and support services, which to varying degrees, all consume energy, require fleet vehicle support, produce waste and use water. All this activity produces carbon emissions which have been steadily rising. Between academic years 2005/6 and 2009/10 alone carbon emissions rose by 10% from 15,620 to 17,181 tonnes. The carbon emissions included in the 2009/10 baseline year are 17,181 tCO2 . The cost, for example, of the most significant proportion, the baseline energy spend, was £2.4 million in 2009/10.
