Functions of University Microbiological Safety Officer

  1. To provide professional advice to the University on matters of microbiological health and safety.
  2. To follow a programme of continuous professional development to sustain professional expertise.
  3. To liaise with Department/Building Safety Coordinators and other Department safety staff, as appropriate, and with members of the University Health and Safety Committee over the implementation of the University Health and Safety Policy in relation to microbiological health and safety.
  4. To co-operate with specialists internal and external to the University on microbiological health and safety.
  5. To advise Officers in charge of the design and construction of new buildings and existing buildings in relation to microbiological health and safety.
  6. To co-operate with the University Occupational Health Service in the provision of occupational health surveillance and monitoring where necessary.
  7. To advise on: 

    • waste disposal;
     
    • the design of microbiological work areas ;
     
    • the preparation of schemes of work and local rules;
     
    • COSHH assessments in relation to microbiological health and safety;
     
    • the acquisition of any required licences or authorisations;  

    • the management of any Legionella risks;
  8. To oversee and co-ordinate the provision of microbiological health and safety training.
  9. To keep staff conscious of the problems of microbiological health and safety and their responsibilities for the health and safety of those who work or study with them.
  10. To undertake or assist with periodic inspections of University premises in relation to microbiological health and safety.
  11. 11 To audit and monitor Faculty microbiological health and safety arrangements.
