People and Performance - Making Conversations Count

Target Audience

This workshop is part of the core training which the University of Portsmouth expects staff with management responsibility to complete, ideally with the probationary period.

Session Outline

This workshop replaces the Crucial Conversations and PDR training workshops - elements of both workshops are incorporated into this one.  There is also some new material and a different format.  This workshop is suitable for those who could handle difficult conversations with greater confidence and skill and/or deliver effective PDRs.  It is open to managers, including those who have already attended the PDR or Crucial Conversations workshops.

The aims of the session are:

  • To build skill and confidence in tackling difficult conversations
  • To understand the barriers to success and how to create success.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this session participants will: 

  • Have gained an understanding of what causes these conversations to breakdown
  • Understood and built confidence in how to have difficult conversations with some success.

Pre-Event Preparation


This is a highly practical and experiential workshop.  Group work, facilitated discussion and forum theatre will be used.

Delegates will also be given time to work on and explore their own 'case study' or difficult conversation.
