Networking – making the most of opportunities

Make the most of  Networking:

  • Look for the right event!
  • What do you want to find out/achieve
  • What do you want to share with others afterward
  • Set yourself targets – this may help
  • How will this help you – how will you follow this up afterwards
  • Who would you like to meet etc
  • Take notes – you may come away with useful lists of contacts, names, phone numbers, email addresses
  • Take time to sort through your notes afterwards to make the most of them
  • Talk to a variety of people at different levels – this will give you a better insight
  • Watch and observe – you can learn a lot from others
  • Reflect and consider what you will do differently – this is an important element of professionalism

Top Tips

  • Be open – smile and say help
  • Introduce yourself – this will encourage others to respond
  • Ask for introductions
  • Open up conversations – ask about other peoples work, what they do, where they work etc
  • Be active and listen – make a note of potential contacts
  • Take time to summarise what you have gained from experience
