Notice Periods

Details of the standard notice periods on completion of the probationary period are as follows: 

Heads of Departments, Deans and Senior Managers 

Please refer to your individual Contract of Employment. 

Professors 

  • If you are a Professor, the notice period you must give is three months.
  • The University, as your employer must also give you three months’ notice in the case of termination of your employment.  

Lecturers, Senior Lecturers, Principal Lecturers and Readers 

  • If you are a Lecturer, Senior/Principal Lecturer or a Reader, the notice period you must give is two months.
  • The University, as your employer must give you three months’ notice in the case of termination of your employment.

Research Staff 

  • If you are a Research staff member, the notice period you must give is one month.
  • The University, as your employer must also give you one months’ notice in the case of termination of your employment. 

Support Staff

  • If you are on scale point 31 and below, the notice period you must give is one month.
  • If you are on scale point 32 and above, the notice period you must give is two months.

If you are unsure what scale point you are currently on, you can find out by checking your salary (as stated on your payslip, available via ESS) against the current University pay-scales which will give your scale point and grade.

The University, as your employer must give you the following notice period in the case of termination of your employment, dependent on your length of continuous service:

  • Less than 8 years continuous service: two months
  • Between 8-11 years continuous service: one week for each year of continuous service
  • More than 12 years continuous service: 12 weeks
