Crucial Conversations
Target Audience
Any member of the University of Portsmouth Staff who currently has people management or supervisory elements to their role.
Outline:
This event will provide participants with an opportunity to develop the skills and techniques for proactively engaging in challenging conversations and to successfully address difficult topics, thus maintaining constructive working relationships.
The aims of the briefing session are:
- Plan for a crucial conversation;
- Deliver difficult messages clearly and with impact;
- Respond to feelings as well as facts, using effective listening skills;
- Recognise and manage strong emotions, including their own.
Learning Outcomes:
On completion of the workshop participants will:
- Have the practical tools and skills to effectively plan for crucial conversations;
- Be able to proactively engage in challenging conversations;
- Reframe language to reduce the potential for conflict;
- Have a greater awareness of their preferred style of communication and its impact.

Presenter
Julia Carden; Carden Consulting
Julia is a HR Consultant specialising in developing leaders and managers. Having spent 10 years in the Royal Navy she specialised in HR, she has since worked in both the public and private sectors. Now specialising in assessment and development, Julia is currently working with all levels of management in a variety of organisations including BMW UK, ASDA and Schlumberger. Julia passionately believes that leaders and managers drive and determine the culture they work within and it is their responsibility to make the university a great place to work.
