Supporting Effective PDR's
Target Audience
All members of Staff responsible for conducting Performance and Development Reviews
Outline
The workshop aims to ensure that participants understand the purpose and value of the PDR process and, more importantly, to equip them with the necessary skills and techniques to conduct a meaningful and equitable review. The event will be delivered using interactive and participative methods. Techniques and models such as coaching and questioning funnel will be interspersed where applicable.
The aims of this workshop are:
- To ensure participants are familiar with the PDR process and understand the purpose and value of the appraisal process
- To ensure participants are aware of the significance of the preparation required in conducting a successful PDR meeting
- To equip participants with the necessary skills and techniques to conduct a meaningful and equitable review
- To highlight techniques that may be useful in dealing with difficult review meetings
Learning Outcomes:
As a result of attending participants will be:
- Understand the significance of the PDR process and its relation to the Departmental/Faculty or Service plans
- Able to conduct a good quality, meaningful and equitable review
- Able to provide constructive feedback to individuals surrounding their performance
- Able to help to set realistic and achievable objectives for individuals (and teams)
- Able to help plan a realistic and achievable development plan for individuals
- Aware of possible problematic issues that may arise around the PDR process and be better equipped to deal with these constructively
Pre-event Preparation (if applicable)
- It would be helpful to reflect on a review meeting or review situation that you would like to explore further during training.
Format
This workshop is designed to be fun, interactive and informative. There will be a minimal use of power point and models. You will have the opportunity to observe a typical PDR meeting played out by professional role-players and, through giving advice and guidance, affect its outcome.
There will also be an opportunity to practise and explore how the techniques discussed can be applied to a real review meeting.

Clare and Stewart are Communication skills coaches and role-players. Both have worked as professional actors and have considerable experience working in industry and higher education. Their clients are varied. They include over 15 Universities, businesses in the private and public sector along with Broadcasters, Barristers and Politicians.
