Staff survey 2013
The University has undertaken five staff surveys since 2001. The most recent was in 2011. Our sixth will be open from
28 January until early March and I am inviting all staff to make a contribution to developing our University. You will receive an invitation by email to complete the survey from Capita People Development, our external survey provider.
In our Strategic Plan for 2012-2017 we recognise that our reputation and our success depend on the commitment and
professionalism of our staff. So, gathering information about the issues that affect you is important to us. The purpose of
the survey is to identify those things that are working well, together with the changes you feel would help to improve the
performance of the University and the quality of working life. I appreciate that there are many demands on your time, but I
want to encourage you to take time out of your working day to contribute your views and ideas.
The survey questionnaire has been developed with an independent consultancy, Capita People Development, and covers
a wide range of topics. It should take about 20 minutes to complete – either online or on paper. All responses go direct to
Capita as the survey provider without being seen by anyone inside the University. In addition Capita will conduct the survey,
analyse and feed back responses to us in accordance with the Data Protection Act and the Market Research Society Code
of Conduct which guarantee respondents’ anonymity.
We are committed to taking action to enhance the working environment and will provide staff with updates on progress
and suggestions emerging from the survey. A summary of the survey results will also appear in the autumn 2013 edition of
Communicator. Whatever your role, this is your opportunity to help shape your University and place of work and I hope that
you will take advantage of it.
With best wishes
John Craven
Vice-Chancellor
