Leaving a Bequest to the University of Portsmouth

The University of Portsmouth is a leading modern university with a strong reputation for teaching and research. Many of our academics are international leaders in their fields and our students learn from experts who are pushing forward the boundaries of knowledge. Legacy gifts are becoming increasingly more important in securing the University’s financial future and helping to ensure its continued success.

Your legacy can make a difference

When you choose to leave a gift to the University of Portsmouth in your Will you are showing a real commitment and investment in Higher Education. Your support will live on after you have gone and pave the way for future generations.

Other benefits

  • The University is an exempt charity which means that, like a charity, we won't pay any tax on gifts of money or property left to us by you. This means leaving a legacy to the University of Portsmouth will reduce any tax payable by your estate.
  • A legacy gift can be used to support many areas of the work we do at Portsmouth, from funding world-class medical research or extracurricular activities through to providing bursaries or scholarships for our students. We are happy to discuss with you which area you would like your gift to benefit.
  • There are different types of legacies, meaning you can ensure you look after your family and friends as well as supporting the University.
  • Your gift will ensure your memory lives on at your University.

Types of legacy

There are several ways you can choose to leave a legacy to the University of Portsmouth:

  • Residuary Legacy: This is a gift of all, or a share of, what is left after all your bequests, taxes, debts, and expenses have been paid. The advantage of a residuary legacy is that its value will not be eroded by inflation.
  • Pecuniary Legacy: This is a fixed sum of money to a named beneficiary, and can also be stocks and shares.
  • Specific Legacy: This is a particular object or piece of property.
  • Contingent Legacy: This is a legacy which depends on an event occurring (or not occurring) before it is effective. For instance a gift to charity dependent on someone else not surviving you.
  • Reversionary Legacy: This gift has the advantage of providing for your family first and then benefiting the University. So when the original beneficiary dies, the gift in your will reverts to the University of Portsmouth. Your solicitor or legal advisor will be able to provide you with wording for this form of legacy.

Leaving a legacy is a straight-forward process, but we would advise you in all cases to see a solicitor who can advise you on your particular circumstances.
