What is a data controller?

  • a data controller is an organisation that determines the uses for which personal data is processed.  The University is therefore a data controller.  All data controllers must be registered with the Information Commissioner and must state why and for what purpose the information is to be processed.  All data controllers and the purposes for which they collect information is contained in a register of data controllers which can be viewed here.

  • For the purposes of the University though, only one individual is named as a contact point for any data protection matters, the Data Protection Officer.
