Groups and events
At certain times during the year, the University Counselling Service runs groups, one-off events and workshops for students. Details of these and how to join them, are posted on this page. Registration is online using the hyperlinks provided; booking in each case opens about a month before the group or workshop takes place. Only the Counselling Service counsellors and administrator will be able to access the group lists.
Counselling Service Group Programme (2011-2012)
All groups run on a Wednesday afternoon. Each group is different but they are all friendly and welcoming. It’s worth thinking about what group is right for you and what you really want to commit to, to get the most out of it. They are usually very popular so do sign up in advance and please let us know with 24 hours notice if you cannot make it, so we can offer your place to someone else.

Emotional Coping Skills
This is a series of groups for students who want to understand more about how to cope with their own (and sometimes other people’s) feelings. You can sign up to just one group, or to some or all of them, as they will work both singly and make sense as a whole. The same person will run each session.

Learning about Bereavement
This is run jointly by members of the Counselling Service and the Chaplaincy Team
These sessions are to help students who have experienced bereavement in some way think about what it means and how loss can be lived with. It’s not a therapy group, but it will be supportive and will look at all the thoughts and feeling that go with bereavement. It should help people to feel that they can see their way through it more clearly. You can sign up to a single session, a few sessions or to the whole series. The same people will run each session.

Supporting yourself
These workshops are all on specific topics and you can sign up for whichever ones you feel might apply to you. They will be run by different members of the counselling team, and some are run more than once.

These workshops will help you learn skills to manage stress. They are run by both the Counselling Service and Chaplaincy, and you can sign up to one or more of them.

Mindfulness
Mindfulness is a meditative approach that helps you to cope with stress and anxiety. While it can take years to learn it properly, this six week group will teach you the basics of mindfulness and enable you to use it in your everyday life. You do need to attend all of the sessions to be able to make it work, so there is a commitment involved. But feedback from students makes us know that it’s really worth it. If you’re interested we’ll invite you to meet with the group leader and find out a bit more before signing up.
