The Application Process
Applications for postgraduate courses (MA, MSc, MPA, MBA, MPhil or PhD) are made directly to the University of Portsmouth. Applications can be made throughout the year. However, you are strongly advised to apply early (preferably before May) so that the University can process your application form and you can make your accommodation and travel arrangements.
Step 1
Download an application form and associated documents:
- Postgraduate Application Form (.pdf)
- Postgraduate Guidance Notes (.pdf)
- Postgraduate Reference Request (.pdf)
Complete the application form, write a personal statement and obtain two references (two academic or one academic and one employment).
Step 2
Send the following documents to:
International Office Admissions
International Office
University of Portsmouth
Nuffield Centre
St Michael's Road
Portsmouth
PO1 2ED, UK.
Email: internationaloffice.admissions@port.ac.uk
- Completed application form
- Personal Statement / Statement of Purpose
- Proof of degree and grades (officially certified and translated copies)
- Proof of English language level (e.g. IELTS or TOEFL Certificate)
- Two references
You can apply even if you have not received your final results from your University or completed your English language qualification. However, please make a note on your application form that these grades are pending.
Step 3
After your application has been received by the University you will receive one of the following decisions:
- Unconditional (you are accepted without any conditions)
- Conditional (you are accepted, subject to the fulfilment of one or more conditions. This is usual if you have not yet completed university, taken an English language test or provided references. Once you have fulfilled the conditions of your offer it will be converted to Unconditional)
- Reject (your application has been unsuccessful)
If you receive an Unconditional or Conditional offer you must inform the University whether you would like to accept the offer. You can do this by returning the Reply Card (to the International Office Admissions address above) or by sending an email to internationaloffice.admissions@port.ac.uk.
It is important to accept your offer as soon as possible because university accommodation has limited availability and those who go FIRM after the beginning of May are less likely to be allocated a place. Student Housing Allocation Policy
If your offer is Conditional, you must send us the documentation required to fulfil the conditions (your examination results / English language test result / references) as soon as you receive them.
Step 4
Once your offer is 'Unconditional Firm', you will receive a Certificate of Final Acceptance.
If you have any queries about your application, please email internationaloffice.admissions@port.ac.uk.
