The Application Process

Applications for undergraduate courses (BA, BSc, BEng, LLB, MPharm) are made online at www.ucas.ac.uk (Universities and Colleges Admissions).

UCAS is an independent organisation that handles undergraduate applications for all UK universities. Applicants can make up to five choices. These five choices can be different courses at the same university or the same course at different universities, or a combination of both. One choice will cost £7 and five choices will cost £17 (payable online).

Step 1

Applications should be made between mid-September and the January deadline set by UCAS. There are several sections to complete on the online UCAS application:

  • Registration
  • Personal details
  • Choices
  • Education
  • Employment
  • Personal Statement
  • Reference
  • Declaration
  • Pay & Send

Step 2

Once you have submitted your application you will be able to log on to your UCAS account and view the decision for each of your choices as they arrive. Please note that it may take several weeks to receive the decisions, therefore early application is recommended. You will receive one of three types of decision:

  • Unconditional (you are accepted without any conditions)
  • Conditional (you are accepted, subject to the fulfilment of one or more conditions. This is usual if you have not yet completed high school, taken an English language test or provided a reference. Once you have fulfilled the conditions of your offer it will be converted to Unconditional)
  • Reject (your application has been unsuccessful)

Step 3

If you receive Unconditional or Conditional offers you must then decide which two offers to accept. Your first choice will be your FIRM place and your second choice (only necessary if your offer is Conditional) will be your INSURANCE place.

If you are intending to study at the University of Portsmouth, it is important to 'go FIRM' as soon as possible because university accommodation has limited availability and those who go FIRM after the beginning of May are less likely to be allocated a place. Student Housing Allocation Policy.

If your offer is Conditional, you must send us the documentation required to fulfil the conditions (your examination results / English language test result / Academic reference) as soon as you receive them. Please send the documents to:

Step 4

Once your offer is 'Unconditional Firm', you will receive a Certificate of Final Acceptance (usually in the summer before enrolment).
