EU Students - Working in the UK
It is normal for students to work in the UK while studying. As well as a source of income, work experience provides a valuable opportunity to develop skills rated highly by graduate employers. Problem-solving, creative thinking, teamwork and leadership skills can all be developed by having a part-time job.
Regulations
Students from the following countries are free to work in the UK with no restrictions:
- Austria
- Belgium
- Republic of Cyprus
- Denmark
- Finland
- France
- Germany
- Greece
- Ireland
- Italy
- Liechtenstein
- Luxembourg
- Malta
- Netherlands
- Portugal
- Spain
- Sweden
Students from the recent Accession countries are allowed to work in the UK but are subject to certain restrictions. It is important that you understand what your rights and responsibilities are, and that you comply with any obligations. Failure to do so might mean that you would be working illegally and be subject to prosecution or a £1000 fine. The restrictions are:
A2 Nationals
If you are a national of Bulgaria or Romania you must not work until you have been given permission. Please read the information for Bulgarian and Romanian nationals on the Home Office website. Once you are in the UK you will need to apply for a Worker Registration Certificate using form BR1 (in the right-hand menu). You must not work for more than 20 hours per week.
When applying for a Worker Registration Certificate, you can email BaRCEnquiries@UKBA.gsi.gov.uk to correspond directly with UKBA regarding your application. Please note that this email address is only for applications currently in progress and you MUST include your Case Reference Number or they may not respond to your enquiry.

Please note: EU students are subject to the same tax and national insurance contributions as UK students.
Finding a job
Job vacancies for part time work can be found at Purple Door Careers and Recruitment. Typical employment opportunities include catering work, reception work, jobs in the tourist industry and shop assistant positions. Typical salaries are approximately £5.50 - £6.00 per hour for a basic level job, with more being paid for skilled jobs with more responsibility.
Please note: the University reasonably expects that you do not work so many hours that it impacts on your academic performance.
