Ministry of Higher Education information

If you are still awaiting approval for sponsorship from the Ministry of Higher Education in UAE, please note that their website is causing some confusion.  We would like to confirm the following from Mr Abdulrahim Al-Marri, Cultural Attache, UAE Embassy London:

"The University of Portsmouth is recognised by the Ministry of Higher Education in the UAE, provided that students study full-time at the University of Portsmouth.  Part-time and distance learning programmes are not acceptable.  Courses undertaken at other institutions but offering degrees awarded by the University of Portsmouth are also not recognised."

Entry requirements

We are happy to consider overseas applications on a case by case basis.  As a general guide:

Foundation:

A minimum of 60% pass in the Tawjihiyaa (General Secondary School Certificate)

Undergraduate:

Successfully pass a recognised foundation programme.  If you have a 2 year diploma from a recognised institution, you can be considered for the first year of a degree programme.  If you have a strong GPA you may be considered for Year 2 of a relevant degree programme.  

A-Levels and the International Baccalaureate are also accepted.  Students with a Higher National Diploma (HND) or Higher Diploma can be considered for advanced entry onto a relevant undergraduate degree programme.

Postgraduate:

We require a good degree pass of 2nd class or above. We would also expect a 'Good' GPA from UAE. 

For entry onto our MBA International, students will also need at least 3 years relevant work experience after graduation in a managerial or supervisory capacity.  Work experience is also required for several other postgraduate courses and many courses will require you to have studied relevant subjects. PhD:

Students holding a good Masters Degree will be considered for PhD study upon submission of a research proposal. Please visit our Graduate School pages for information on specific areas of research.

English Language requirements:

We accept IELTS, TOEFL, IGCSE  and several other certificates. The required score will depend on your level of entry and your chosen course. Please visit English language requirements for more details. We offer Pre-sessional English language programmes for applicants who do not yet meet the required English level for entry onto our degree courses.
