Study abroad
'Study Abroad' is a programme for international and EU students who are enrolled at a University outside the UK with which the University of Portsmouth does not hold a bilateral exchange. It enables students to study at the University of Portsmouth for one semester or a full academic year. On completion of the semester/year, you will be able to transfer the credit back to your home institution.

Courses
You will study in classes alongside full time British and international students. As well attending lectures, you will also take part in smaller seminars and tutorial classes, giving you the opportunity to work closely with, and get to know, other students on your course.
To check whether your chosen subject area is available at the University of Portsmouth, please visit www.port.ac.uk/courses. A list of units within each subject can be sent to you on request.
It is advisable to check with your home institution that your chosen subject is suitable and that credit for individual units will be accepted for your degree. Each unit of study is worth 10 or 20 credits with a maximum of 60 credits per semester:
- 10 UK credits = 5 ECTS credits = 2.5 US credits
- 20 UK credits = 10 ECTS credits = 5 US credits
- 60 UK credits = 30 ECTS credits = 15 US credits
Entry Requirements
- At least one year of university education in a relevant major/minor
- Minimum Cumulative GPA: 2.6 / 4 - 2.8 / 4, depending on your chosen subject
- Minimum English language level (for students whose first language is not English): IELTS 6.0 / TOEFL 80 (IBT). You may be eligible for Junior Year Abroad or a Pre-Sessional English course if your level is below this (please email jya@port.ac.uk for advice)

Payment of fees by Home University
If your university/college will be paying your tuition fees to the University of Portsmouth you will need to submit an official certificate/letter to our Student Administration Division BEFORE registering on your course. This should contain all the relevant information necessary for us to invoice your sponsor - as detailed here.
If we do not receive this, you will become liable for paying your fee as soon as you have registered on your course and you will be expected to comply with the University of Portsmouth payment terms and conditions. Please see full information on tuition fees and policies here.
Visas
International Students must obtain entry clearance (a visa) before travelling to the UK. For one academic year, you will require a Tier 4 (General) Student Visa. This visa entitles you to work for up to 20 hours per week during term time while studying in the UK.
Alternatively, if you will be studying in Portsmouth for one semester only, you can apply for a Student Visitor Visa. Please note - a student visitor is not entitled to stay in the UK for more than six months, switch to any other visa, extend current visa, change their course or work during the study period.
