University Sports Scholars selected for high level NGB Podium funding
Two of the Universities highest achieving Sports Scholars have just been given the exciting news that they have been selected for elite Podium funding as part of their NGB's high performance programmes taking them to Rio 2016.
Lauren Steadman - GB International - ParaTriathlon
At the age of 20, BSc (Hons) Psychology student Lauren Steadman has already competed at the last 2 Paralympic Games in Beijing and London. Lauren finished 6th and 8th in the pool London. After 5 years of being on GB Swimming podium funding she has now successfully moved into ParaTriathlon and is now part of GB's elite 3 women. She is currently ranked #2 in the world for her classification. During London 2012 Lauren was the room mate of Ellie Symmonds,
star of the paralympic GB team and will hoping they can repeat that partnership again in Rio!
Lauren will now be supported by GB ParaTriathlon with the ultimate aim of medalling at Rio 2016.
Cecilia Turk - GB International - Boccia
Cecilia Turk is a 5 time National and twice British Boccia Champion. Currently studying for an MSc Combined Studies, Ce narrowly missed out on competing in London 2012 after being part of the 4 person squad where only 3 people could compete. This disappointment has been softened by the news that she has been selected for the GB Boccia World Class programme 2013-17 Rio. This will now give Ce the support and resources necessary to train specifically for Rio 2016.
Both students already receive a high level of support from the University of Portsmouth as part of their Podium Sports Scholarships - which aim to support our highest achieving athletes reach the top of their sport on the world stage.
Head of Sport & Recreation at the University, Paul Tilley said, 'We are thrilled that Lauren and Ce have both been selected for their respective podium programmes. They are an absolute credit to them selves and the University, sacrificing significantly to ensure they are in a position to be the best they can academically and in their chosen sports. We will do all we can to support them in their road to Rio'.
