Sport and Recreation
The Department of Sport and Recreation at the University of Portsmouth has effective partnerships with a number of local high performance sport outlets.
At Portsmouth we believe that partnership is one of the key components of success. Sharing resources, skill sets and ideas is crucial for the continued development of both University sport and the community clubs we work with.
Havant Hockey Club
Havant Hockey Club (National Conference West side) has been an integral part of the National Premier League until it recently lost a relegation play-off, and has won the National title on numeorus occasions. Players from the University have the opportunity to enhance their playing experience by representing Havant, gaining exposure to National League hockey. In 2008/9 four University students represented Havant. Havant offer bursaries of up to £250 to any student who represents one of the Elite teams.
Portsmouth Northsea Swimming Club (PNSC) was founded in 1927 and recently celebrated their 75th competitive year. They remain one of the premier clubs in the UK, regularly reaching the prestigious Speedo League final, finishing in the top 2 in the majority of entries and producing numerous international swimmers. They recently moved into the new £20 million Mountbatten Centre, a 50-metre Olympic standard pool. University students have the opportunity of an established pathway for talented swimmers to feed into Portsmouth Northsea competitively.
Portsmouth Rugby Football Club
Portsmouth Rugby Football Club (PRFC) is a long-established club of over 120 years. The mens 1st XV plays in the National League 3 London and has strong tradition of University students representing them. The current 1st XV Captain is University student Simon Gregory. PRFC offer five scholarships of up to £500 each annually to University students who represent the 1st XV.
Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS)
The Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS) is a government-funded programme which awards scholarships to athletes who wish to combine sport and education. The University is an accredited TASS institution working in partnership with the University of Southampton to deliver athlete mentoring and a range of support services to athletes in and around the south coast.
