Sports Scholarships

Sports Scholarship Scheme

If you are competing at a regional or international level in your sport you could be eligible for support and funding through one of our Sports Scholarship schemes. Our aim is to help you balance a demanding training and competition schedule with the pressures of achieving a high quality degree.

Our scholarship programme runs on two main levels:

Elite Scholars

To apply for an elite scholarship you must be an athlete who have national representation in team sports at U21 or senior level and are on the TASS scheme or identified in the top 10 at U21 level in your relevant sport. You can also apply to this scheme if you are competing for national U18/U21 teams or with a national top 10 ranking at U18s.

The Elite Scholarship provides the following opportunities:

  • Free access to university sports facilities including gym and fitness classes
  • Free membership to your Athletic Union club
  • Sport science support including physiology, psychology and biomechanics
  • Free physiotherapy
  • Personal mentor
  • Academic mentor scheme to represent any academic issues
  • Free sports scholarship kit
  • Strength and conditioning coach
  • Contingency fund (by application) for international competition expenses
  • Grouping in same halls (where eligible and if the University of Portsmouth is your first choice)

Development Scholars

We will give priority to Athletic Union Sports.

Eligible sports

Both schemes are primarily aimed at EIS priority sports and Olympic sports (please see full list below). Other sports may be considered on a case-by-case basis. These scholarships are aimed at exceptionally talented athletes who may be competing at the London Games and who are looking to come to university after the Olympics or those individuals who have the potential to compete at the 2016 Olympics.

How to apply - For 2012/13 Academic Year

The panel assessing applications for the September 2012 entry will meet at three stages:

  1. End of April 2012: This is to enable prospective students to get an idea as to whether they would be accepted onto the scheme so as to help with their decision about which University to attend.

A limited number of offers will be made at this stage. A number of applications may be deferred until September. Deadline for applications is 5 March 2012.

  2. End of September 2012: This will be the main panel meeting to establish sports scholars for the year. The panel will make a decision on the successful scholars taking into consideration a number of different factors to ensure we select the people who will most benefit from the scheme and the support we can offer. Meeting the eligibility criteria does not mean you will automatically be selected for an award. Deadline for applications is 30 September 2012.

  3. December 2012: Anyone missing the September deadline may submit an application by the end of November 2012, which will be considered in December with view to the person starting the scheme in January 2013. Any additional awards are dependent on the number of scholarships we give in September and is normally reserved for exceptional athletes who we miss in the September 30 deadline.

Notes

Applicants coming into their first year who wish to be part of the grouped accommodation are required to submit an application by the March 2012 deadline and make the University of Portsmouth their first firm choice.

Meeting the minimum requirements does not automatically mean you will receive a scholarship.
