Funding for current students in 2011/12

If you started an undergraduate course in 2011/12 or earlier you can still apply for funding for this year. New and returning students applying for 2011/12 can apply for the funding detailed below.

  • Full-time students

    Tuition Fee Loan

    Tuition fees for full-time undergraduate home(UK) and EU students in 2011/12 are £3,375. All full-time UK and EU students can apply for a Tuition Fee Loan to cover their fees. This loan is not income assessed and is paid directly to the university.

    Maintenance Loan

    The Maintenance Loan is available to full-time home (UK) students under the age of 60 on 1 September (in the year their course began). The amount available will depend on where you live whilst studying, how much Maintenance Grant you receive and your assessed household income. The maximum Maintenance Loan for students living outside of the parental home is £4,950.

    Maintenance Grant

    This non-repayable grant is available to eligible full-time home (UK) students with an assessed household income under £50,020. How much you will be eligible for will depend on your assessed household income. The maximum Maintenance Grant is £2,906.

    University of Portsmouth Bursary

    The University of Portsmouth Bursary is worth up to £900 and is paid to eligible full-time home (UK) students with an assessed household income of £32,000 or less.

    Local Colleges Bursary

    A non income assessed bursary of £300 is available to students who have studied at an eligible local college. The eligible colleges are:

      • Bay House School
      • Carisbrooke High School
      • Cowes High School
      • Fareham College
      • Havant College
      • Highbury College
      • Isle of Wight College
      • Medina High School
      • Oaklands School
      • Portsmouth College
      • Ryde High School
      • Sandown High School
      • South Downs College
      • St Vincent's College
      • University of Portsmouth (if you obtained a Further Education qualification, e.g. an Access course)
    How to apply

    You can apply for all of the support detailed above online through Student Finance England.

  • Students with dependants

    Full-time undergraduate home (UK) students who have dependants can apply for additional support on top of the standard undergraduate support described above.

    Special Support Grant

    If you are a lone parent with an underlying entitlement to housing benefit you can apply for the Special Support Grant instead of the Maintenance Grant. If you receive this grant it is disregarded when calculating your entitlement to benefits.

    Childcare Grant

    Depending on your assessed household income you can apply for a grant to cover a maximum of 85% of registered childcare.

    Parents' Learning Allowance

    Up to £1,508 per year is available if you are financially responsible for a child under the age of 16 (or 19 if they are in full-time, non-advanced education).

    Adult Dependants Grant

    Up to £2,642 per year is available to eligible students who are financially responsible for a partner or spouse.

  • Students with a disability

    If you have a disability or learning difficulty you may be eligible for Disabled Students Allowance to cover any additional costs that you incur whilst studying your course as a result of your disability. The DSA is provided in addition to any other funding and is non-income assessed. You apply for this via Student Finance England.

  • NHS funded students

    Tuition Fees

    Most home (UK) and EU students studying on an NHS funded course will have their tuition fees paid by the NHS. In addition home students can apply for help with living costs.

    Degree Level Courses

    Students on the BSc(Hons) Diagnostic or Therapeutic Radiography or the BSc(Hons) Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy can apply for a reduced rate of Maintenance Loan (£2,324 for students living away from home) through Student Finance England, as well as an income assessed NHS Bursary.

    Diploma Level Courses

    Students on the DipHE Operating Department Practice or CertHE Dental Nursing courses can apply for a non-income assessed NHS Bursary of £6,701. DipHE ODP students need to apply through the NHS, CertHE Dental Nursing students need to apply via the Student Finance Centre.

    Additional Allowances

    Students with a disability or dependants may be eligible for extra help from the NHS, please contact us for further information.

  • Part-time students

    If you started a part-time undergraduate course in 2011/12 or earlier you can still apply for funding for this year. Please note, if you are a full-time student repeating some units on a part-time basis you would still need to apply for the full-time support detailed above.

    Tuition Fee Grant

    You can apply via Student Finance England for a non-repayable grant towards your tuition fees. The grant is income assessed, so how much you will be eligible for will depend on your household income, as well as the intensity of your course. For 2011/12 the maximum grants available are:

      • Up to £820 if your course is equivalent to at least 50% of a full-time course
      • Up to £985 if your course is equivalent to at least 60% of a full-time course
      • Up to £1,230 if your course is equivalent to at least 75% of a full-time course

    To be eligible for a tuition fee grant your household income must be less than £25,420 (higher limits apply to students with a partner or children).

    Course Costs Grant

    A non-repayable Course Costs Grant of up to £265 per year is available to help with books and travel costs. To be eligible for a course costs grant your household income must be less than £28,065 (higher limits apply to students with a partner or children).

    How to apply

    You apply for this support by completing a PTG1 form and returning it to Student Finance England. Please note that section 6 of the form must be completed by the university to confirm your attendance on the course.
