I started my course after 1 September 2012 and this is my first year
New students who started this September and have not yet applied for student finance can still apply for the funding detailed below up until the 31st May 2013.

Full-time students
The information below is only relevant to students who started their course after 1 September 2012. If you started before this date please visit our page for students who started before 1 September 2012.
Tuition Fee Loan
Tuition fees in 2012/13 for new full-time undergraduate home(UK) and EU students who started their course after 1 September 2012 are £8,500 . All full-time UK and EU students can apply for a tuition fee loan to cover their fees. This loan is not income-assessed and is paid directly to the university.
Maintenance Loan
The maintenance loan is available to full-time home (UK) students under the age of 60 on 1 September in the year their course began. The amount available will depend on where you live whilst studying, how much maintenance grant you receive and your assessed household income. The maximum maintenance loan for students living outside of the parental home is £5,500.
Maintenance Grant
This non-repayable grant is available to eligible full-time home (UK) students with an assessed household income under £42,600. How much you will be eligible for will depend on your assessed household income. The maximum maintenance grant is £3,250.
University of Portsmouth Bursary
All eligible English full-time undergraduate students starting their course at the University of Portsmouth in 2012, whose assessed family incomes are £25,000 or less will receive a bursary of £1,000 for each year of their course and a fee discount of £2,000 in their first year only. Students with household incomes between £25,001 and £42,600 will also receive a bursary towards their living costs.

Students on PGCE courses may be eligible for the cash element of the bursary only, not the tuition fee discount. Students with dependants
Full-time undergraduate home (UK) students who have dependants can apply for additional support on top of the standard undergraduate support described above.
Special Support Grant
If you are a lone parent with an underlying entitlement to housing benefit you can apply for the special support grant instead of the maintenance grant. If you receive this grant it is disregarded when calculating your entitlement to benefits.
Childcare Grant
Depending on your assessed household income you can apply for a grant to cover a maximum of 85% of registered childcare (Up to a maximum of £148.75 per week for one child or £255 per week for two or more children.
Parents' Learning Allowance
Up to £1,508 per year is available if you are financially responsible for a child under the age of 16 (or 19 if they are in full-time, non-advanced education).
Adult Dependants Grant
Up to £2,642 per year is available to eligible students who are financially responsible for a partner or spouse.

Students with a disability
If you have a disability or learning difficulty you may be eligible for Disabled Students Allowance to cover any additional costs that you incur whilst studying your course as a result of your disability. The DSA is provided in addition to any other funding and is non income-assessed. You apply for this via Student Finance England.

NHS funded students
The information below is only relevant to students who started their course after 1 September 2012. If you started before this date please visit our page for students who started before 1 September 2012.
Most home (UK) and EU students studying on an NHS funded course will have some or all of their tuition fees paid by the NHS. In addition home students can apply for help with living costs.
Students on the following courses:
BSc(Hons) Diagnostic or Therapeutic Radiography
BSc(Hons) Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy
DipHE Operating Department Practicecan apply for a reduced rate of maintenance loan (£2,324 for students living away from home) through Student Finance England,. They can also apply for a non means-tested NHS Grant and a means-tested NHS Bursary. For more details visit the NHS website.
CertHE Dental NursingHome (UK) students on CertHE Dental Nursing courses can apply for a non means-tested bursary of £6,701 via the Student Finance Centre.

Students with a disability or dependants may be eligible for extra help, please contact us for further information.

Part-time students
The information below is only relevant to students who started their course after 1 September 2012. If you started before this date please visit our page for students who started before 1 September 2012.
All eligible part-time English or EU undergraduate students studying at least 25% of a full-time course can apply for a loan to cover tuition costs. This loan is not income assessed and is paid directly to the University.You only start to repay your loan from the April four years after your course started - or the April after you leave your studies, whichever is sooner - and then only if you earn over £21,000, when you make repayments at a rate of 9% of annual earnings above £21,000. If you are still studying at that point you will only have to make repayments if you are also earning over £21,000.
For administrative reasons related to the introduction of the new student finance system, no-one will be required to repay earlier than April 2016.
