PGCE and Cert Ed students
If you are thinking of studying a PGCE teacher training course you may be eligible for a training salary from the government, which will be administered through your department (UK and EU students only). UK students can also apply to Student Finance England for a tuition fee loan, living cost loan, living cost grant and a University of Portsmouth bursary. If you are an EU student studying a PGCE you will be able to apply for the tuition fee loan and the University of Portsmouth bursary only.

Please note, if you are a current undergraduate student thinking of starting a PGCE course in 2012 you will be treated as a new student for this course, and you will come under the new fees and funding arrangements.

Tuition Fees
The only tuition fee which has currently been announced is for the PGCE Post Compulsory Education which will be £8,500 for new 2012 starters. We are awaiting confirmation of the fee for all other PGCE courses funded via the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) and will publish them as soon as they are available.

PGCE Secondary subjects
The Government has consulted on proposals for selective bursaries (based on subject and degree class) for training in 2012/13 and will announce final policy in the autumn. Please check this page regularly for the latest information about the training bursary rates, including details of the package for 2012/13 when announced. For reference, the bursary amounts for training in 2011/12 are illustrated below:
The Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) will pay some students a non means-tested bursary of either £6,000 or £9,000 depending on the subject they teach. The £6,000 bursary is paid to those taking secondary subjects in biology, modern foreign languages, and combined general sciences. The highest amount of £9,000 is for students who intend to teach in shortage subjects of chemistry, physics, engineering, and mathematics. There is no bursary for other secondary or primary subjects.

PGCE Post-compulsory Education and Training trainees only
Students on the above coursemay be eligible for a training bursary of £4,000 (Subjects: ICT, English, Media studies and Performing Arts, Design and Technology, Skills for Life: Literacy and ESOL, Business Administration, Health, Social Care and Public Services). Students may be eligible for a higher training bursary of £7,000 (Subjects: Skills for Life: Numeracy, Maths, Science, Construction and Engineering). These bursary amounts are subject to change.

Additional Support Funds from the University of Portsmouth
Current University of Portsmouth students on a PGCE course who can demonstrate a genuine additional financial need can apply for further financial assistance from the Access to Learning Fund and various other additional support funds.
