PGCE and Cert Ed students

If you are thinking of studying a full-time PGCE teacher training course you may be eligible for a training bursary from the government, which will be administered through your department (UK and EU students only). English students can also apply to Student Finance England for a tuition fee loan, living cost loan and living cost grant. Students on PGCE courses may also be eligible for the cash element only of the University of Portsmouth Bursary. If you are an EU student studying a PGCE you will be able to apply for the tuition fee loan only.

Please note, if you are a current undergraduate student thinking of starting a PGCE course in 2012 you will be treated as a new student for this course, and you will come under the new fees and funding arrangements.

  • Tuition Fees

    Tuition fees for all full-time PGCE courses starting in September 2012 will be £8,500. Students from England or the EU will be able to apply for a tution fee loan to cover their fees from Student Finance England. Students from Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland should contact their home government for details of any support available if you choose to study in England.

  • PGCE Secondary subjects

    The Teaching Agency (TA) has recently announced the package of training bursaries that will be available to full-time PGCE trainees in 2012/13. Bursaries are available for trainees on eligible postgraduate courses in England who are not employed as a teacher. Full-time PGCE students from England will be also able to apply for the cash element only (not fee waiver) of the University of Portsmouth Bursary alongside the statutory support from Student Finance England.

    Teaching Agency bursary amounts will vary depending on teaching subject and the class of undergraduate degree that the student attained. Trainees will need to have achieved at least a 2:2 to be eligible for a training bursary.

    1) Art and design, design and technology, economics, engineering, English, dance, drama, geography, history, information and communications technology (ICT), computer science, classics, music, biology, physical education, primary, and religious education mainstream post-graduate PGCE courses attract £9,000 bursaries for trainees with a first and £5,000 for trainees with a 2:1.

    2) General science, business studies, citizenship, applied science, health and social care, leisure and tourism, media studies, psychology, social sciences (except economics) PGCE courses attract no bursary.

  • PGCE Post-compulsory Education and Training

    Students on the above course are not eligible for any training bursaries from the Teaching Agency. However, full-time students from England will be able to apply for the cash element only (not fee waiver) of the University of Portsmouth Bursary alongside the statutory support from Student Finance England.

    Students on this course will also be able to apply for a fee award of £1,000, which is available to up to 10,000 applicants training to teach in the FE and skills sector and following a higher education institution (HEI)-validated qualification. The fee awards will be arranged through the University of Portsmouth on a first-come, first-served basis. The University of Portsmouth will make an application on your behalf once you have enrolled on your course. You will need to provide the university with full personal details including your National Insurance number, date of birth and postcode.  Awards can only be used to offset the cost of course fees, there is no cash alternative.  If your application is successful it will be paid directly to the University who will use it to offset an element of your tuition fees.   • Additional Support Funds from the University of Portsmouth

    Current University of Portsmouth students on a PGCE course who can demonstrate a genuine additional financial need can apply for further financial assistance from the Access to Learning Fund and various other additional support funds.
