Funding for International Students

There is no UK funding for international students, therefore you are expected to be fully self-supporting whilst studying here. Before you can be granted a visa to come and study in the UK, you must prove that you have made adequate financial provision at the start of their course, covering tuition fees, accommodation and general living costs in line with current UKBA requirements (full tuition fees and the equivalent of £8,000 a year towards accommodation & living costs).

Tuition Fees

Fees for international students vary according to your course. For up-to-date information regarding fees, visit the page for the specific course that you are interested in. The tuition fee loan, available to Home and EU students is not accessible to international students.

Your tuition fees can be paid in full or by instalments, please view our tuition fee payment pages for more information.

British Council

The British Government offers some awards to international students through the British Council. You should apply for these through British Council Offices in your home country. For further information please refer to the British Council.

International Bursary

Global Outreach: Access to Learning (GOAL) is a bursary for students who are nationals of middle and low income countries, as defined principally by the United Nations Human Development Index. Visit our International Office for the list of countries.

GOAL awards are available to self-funding, undergraduate students studying on a full-time course with annual fees of £10,500 or above and all full-time postgraduate taught and research students. The award is only for international (non-EU) students commencing courses from September 2013, for the first year of study at Portsmouth (and is not available to students who have previously undertaken other courses here).

The GOAL Award takes the form of a 10% fee reduction, effective at the time of registration and will only apply to your first year of study. It cannot be combined with any other scholarship, discount or fee offer, except the 2% 'prompt payment discount' for students paying their fees in full at the start of the academic session.

For further information and to see the list of eligible countries please contact the International Office.

The PassPort Bursary

The PassPort Bursary is a new bursary which also gives self-funded students a 10% fee reduction for the first year of study only.  It applies to all degree courses with fees of £10,500 and above.  The following countries are eligible for the PassPort Bursary for 2013 entry:

  • Brazil
  • Colombia
  • Malaysia
  • Mexico
  • Russia
  • Turkey
  • Ukraine
  • Venezuela

It cannot be combined with any other University discount or scholarship scheme, except the 2% 'prompt payment discount'.

You do not need to apply for the PassPort Bursary - eligible applicants will be awarded automatically.  The discounted fee will be stated on your Confirmation of Acceptance for Study (CAS). The CAS is the final document you receive when you have an unconditional offer to study at the University of Portsmouth and have paid your deposit.

For more information, visit our International Office.

EU and International Emergency Fund

The emergency fund for EU and international students was established to assist those who encounter unforeseen financial difficulties whilst studying. Assistance can only be considered in cases where some form of unforeseen emergency has occurred resulting in significant additional costs or a corresponding loss of income. International students will need to show that they had made adequate financial provision at the start of their course, covering tuition fees, accommodation and general living costs in line with current UKBA requirements (full tuition fees and equivalent of £8,000 a year towards accommodation & living costs).

Students in second or later years of study may be able to apply on the grounds of unforeseen hardship where this can be proven.

Application forms are available from the Student Finance Centre. All applicants will be interviewed and will be required to supply proof of income and expenditure, evidence of their emergency situation and a supporting statement from their Personal tutor, Course leader or Head of Department.

Any awards agreed will be paid as grants so do not requirement repayment. Students are normally only permitted to apply once during their course.

If you have any questions about applying to the fund or concerns about your financial situation please contact us.
