Economics and Finance


The Economics and Finance Subject Group is extremely active in undertaking high-level research in a wide range of areas. Particular areas of expertise within the Subject Group include Financial Markets, International Macroeconomics, Applied Microeconomics, Environmental Economics, Development Economics and Cultural Economics. The Subject Group is also a key contributor to several research groups and clusters within the faculty, including the Finance Research Group, Sport and the Digital Economy Forum, and the cross-faculty Development Studies Group.

Recent research by members of staff has been published in leading academic journals both in Economics and Finance, such as the Economic Journal, the Journal of Urban Economics or the Journal of Banking & Finance (and here), and in related disciplines, like Science, Environment and Planning A, Social Science & Medicine (and here), the British Journal of Management, the European Journal of Operational Research or Tourism Management.

The prestigious Economics and Finance Staff Seminar offers a regular series of talks and papers presented by leading scholars in the field, both from within Portsmouth Business School and from other leading institutions around the world. The programme has a long-established reputation for excellence and celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2013. 

We welcome PhD research applications from anyone who has an interest in the following areas: Environmental and Development Economics (e.g. agriculture and fisheries, blue governance, microfinance), Banking and Finance (e.g. bank profitability, interbank markets, bank regulation, macroprudential policies, prices on financial markets, market microstructure, speculative bubbles and financial crises), Applied Macroeconomics (e.g. foreign direct investment, international trade, behavioural and experimental macroeconomics, macro-financial linkages, household consumption expenditure), and Applied Microeconomics (e.g. behavioural economics, health, education, industrial organisation, corruption, sport, economic analysis of law).
