Biography

Following an initial spell in manufacturing industry (production management), I spent most of my career in local and regional economic development.  This included roles as an economist supporting regional venture capital funds, as a director of an international consultancy company and as a leader of economic development agencies.

I have taught at the University of Portsmouth since 2013, and previously taught economics to A level at Chichester College.  I am also an offshore sailing instructor.

Teaching Responsibilities

My main teaching responsibilities lie in macroeconomics, primarily with first year undergraduate students.  I coordinate the teaching of economics to all students on the common first year within Portsmouth Business School (currently around 750 students).  I have also taught a range of related subjects to first and second year undergraduates on specialist economics courses, and am a personal tutor.

Research

My own primary research interests are in the economics of higher education (specifically the relationship between student characteristics and achievement), and in measuring the effectiveness of innovative teaching practices with an emphasis on interactive and experiential learning.

I supervise a range of undergraduate graduate dissertations, primarily in the fields of infrastructure investment, regional development and applied economics.

I also undertake contract research on behalf of the University, and recently completed a consultancy assignment developing an economic strategy for the region surrounding Riyadh in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
