CCI Placements Case Study
Interior Design Placement Student, Hampshire County Council
BA (Hons) Interior Architecture and Design
What do you do?
I’m working at Hampshire County Council, as part of their Interior Design team. Working within the public sector can be challenging at times but also extremely rewarding; it is imperative that the design team deliver high quality, delightful spaces (often within tight budgets) that people will cherish for the future.
My role involves: - going to client meetings, site visits, designing graphic packages for primary schools as well as signage packages, contacting manufacturers about product, producing finishes and boards for the client. I’ve also been lucky enough to go on specialist training day courses.
What do you like about it?
The design team here is amazing; from day one they welcomed me and straight away made me feel part of the team. I have always been given a lot of responsibility here and it’s nice to see that my creative talents have been recognised and considered in certain projects.
I’ve really enjoyed seeing the transformation of certain projects that I worked on, seeing a project through start to finish is very rewarding and inspiring.
Would you recommend a placement year to other students?
This is a no-brainer…The amount you learn is unbelievable and these experiences are something that only a placement can give you. Being in a working environment grows confidence and not only does this improve your degree classification but it improves your employability.
Making contacts with clients and colleagues, developing relationships within the design field, enhancing soft skills such as time management (something I wasn’t used to doing), problem solving and working within a team have all given me the work and live skills I need to progress into employment in the field that is best suited to my skill set and ambition.
What is your advice to students thinking about looking for a placement?
Start thinking about doing a placement as soon as you find out about it. I definitely recommend using the CCI Placements service as they have a lot to offer and they are there to help you! You can also attend mock interviews at Purple Door where they give you feedback to help you improve.
