Faculty of Technology
Schools and Colleges
The University of Portsmouth wants to raise the aspirations of all students; opening up a world of possibilities that they may not have considered before. As a faculty we aim to inspire students, whatever their background, to take a greater interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subjects; in particular Engineering, Cosmology, Computing and Mathematics.
To support this we run a number of outreach projects for schools and colleges. We can offer a wide range of STEM related activities and talks, both at the university and in schools; and we are keen to work alongside schools and colleges, to ensure they best meet the needs of their students.
Girls into STEM
In 2012 only 13% of the UK’s STEM workforces were female (Wise 2012 report). Our hugely popular annual event, offers year 9 girls a chance to experience the depth and excitement these subjects offer, whether it is exploring the universe or designing and building vehicles.
Over the year we have a number of residential courses. This marine technology course, run with the Smallpeice Trust, allows participants to spend four days working with experienced engineers, discovering a whole new world of possibilities as they work towards a design and build challenge in small groups. In 2014, to ensure the widest participation, the university funded a number of places for local young people who may not otherwise have been able to go.
Helping year 10s find out what University is like. Over two days they get to experience three subject specific taster sessions. These include building remote controlled Drum Robots and learning to program a Raspberry Pi.
IET Greenpower Formula 24
Our engineering department have been working with a group of students from Springfield school to build and race an electric car against schools from all over the UK. A great way to develop team work and to see learning applied in real world context.
